Android 6.0 Marshmallow is now available!

As promised, Google has today delivered Android 6.0 Marshmallow for several of its Nexus devices. You can now download factory images of Android’s latest big update for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player directly from Google. If you don’t feel like going the manual install route, an over-the-air update for each of these products should also be arriving very soon.

The Marshmallow update focuses on improvements to battery life through a new feature called Doze, and also revamps Android’s handling of app permissions in a way that gives users much more efficient control over exactly what information an app has access to.

And then there’s Now on Tap, perhaps the biggest user-facing new feature in Android 6.0. When activated, Now on Tap scans and analyzes whatever is on your screen to pull up relevant information for people, places, or pretty much anything else. Android 6.0 also includes native fingerprint authentication support — just in time for Google’s two new Nexus phones, the Nexus 5X and 6P. Those devices are scheduled to ship this month with Android 6.0 out of the box. We can’t yet say exactly when Android 6.0 will reach flagship phones from companies like Samsung, LG, and Motorola, though. Let the waiting begin.
